VA-05: Al Weed Asks Virgil Goode to Pull Ads
Tue Oct 31, 2006 at 12:35:49 AM PDT

Virgil Goode has ducked debates, run false and misleading ads, and still insists that the money he took from MZM was contributions he did not know were illegal.
Al Weed has sent a letter to Virgil Goode asking him to pull his ad that tries to say that accusations against him (Virgil) about the tainted money and what he did for it are false. This in effect calls Al and all of us who supporft him liars.
Al's letter is on the flip side.
VA-05: Southside Virginia Paper Blasts Virgil Goode
Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 10:24:51 PM PDT
In the middle of what should and has been the strongest area of support for Virgil Goode (R), the local newspaper has lowered the boom on Virgil.
In one day, the Media General-owned newspaper printed both an article and an editorial. The article has to do with Virgil's wife sitting on the board of the North Theatre Group, while at the same time, Virgil was busy doing what he does best.

The Danville Register Bee:
Goode's wife, Lucy, served on the board of directors of the North Theatre as the congressman was securing $150,000 in federal funds for the project. Linwood Duncan, Goode's press secretary, continues to serve on the board.
The editorial was not kind, to put it nicely. Join me over the transom for more corruption.
VA05: Virgil Goode: Hastert is Fine With Me
Fri Oct 06, 2006 at 02:07:55 AM PDT
In a stunning statement that appeared in a sidebar to a related story in the Danville
Register-Bee, Virgil Goode (R-MZM) claims that it was right that Clinton was impeached, but since Mark Foley is already gone, and since he sees no felony having occured, Hastert should continue.

Rep. Virgil Goode, R-5th, said based on what he knows now, he does not think Hastert should step down.
"He [Hastert] said in his statement he was glad Foley resigned and if he hadn't resigned then he would have asked him to."
"He [Clinton] lied under oath and should have been impeached," Goode said. "I don't have any evidence that anyone committed a felony. Foley may have. I'm not sure of the law in Florida, but he's already gone."

VA-05: Al Weed Leads Veterans At D-Day Memorial; Fighting For Our Rights
Wed Sep 20, 2006 at 08:53:26 PM PDT

Yesterday at the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA there was a news conference featuring Al Weed and a number of veterans. I was one of those veterans that attended, and I am very glad I did. DailyKos' own kgerber was also there.
The Memorial itself is a beautiful place, up on a hill overlooking the surrounding area and the mountains. The picture at right is of some of the flags of nations involved that day 52 years ago when forces crashed the beaches at Normandy and started the Allied invasion of German-held territory in Europe.
VA-Sen: Paul Galanti, Swiftboater for Allen
Thu Aug 31, 2006 at 04:38:14 PM PDT

Paul Galanti is an American hero, make no mistake about that. This is what Dave Johnson of
The Patriot Project has to say about him in an August 28th article:
Paul Galanti has earned the nation's respect. He graduated the U.S. Naval Academy in 1962 and entered Naval flight training, where he became an instructor. In 1965 he was assigned to the USS Hancock, a carrier off Vietnam, and flew 97 combat missions before being shot down on June 17, 1966. He was captured and kept as a POW for almost seven years, released February 12, 1973. There are good write-ups describing some of his time as a POW and later career available online here, here and here, and the text of a Virginia Senate and Assembly Joint Resolution commending him is available here.
VA-Sen: George Allen: Only the Rich Should Have Property Rights
Fri Aug 18, 2006 at 12:45:32 AM PDT

In a press release today from the
National Center for Public Policy Research, George Allen is revealed to be anti-property rights. Surprised? I didn't think so.
{emphasis added in following quoted text}
Washington, D.C. - Nearly one year after the U.S. Supreme Court's shocking Kelo v. New London decision touched off a firestorm of bipartisan support for stronger property rights protections, some anti-property rights groups are receiving support from a surprising source: Senator George Allen (R-VA).
Senator Allen is the chief sponsor of legislation that would create a massive federal "National Heritage Area" that would stretch from Charlottesville, VA, through Frederick County, MD, and end in Gettysburg, PA. Such areas are best described as heavily regulated corridors where property rights may be strictly curtailed.
Allen's bill would deputize special interest groups -- many with clear anti-property rights agendas -- and federal employees to oversee land use policy in the corridor.
It gets better; join me, won't you?
VA-05: Al Weed Responds to Foiled Terror Plot
Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 07:04:10 PM PDT

Al Weed released this staement today on the foiled airliner terror plot overseas. Al is running against the clueless and dense Virgil "I didn't know that money was illegal!" Goode (R-MZM)
VA-05: Al Weed Debates Virgil Goode
Thu Aug 10, 2006 at 02:02:05 AM PDT
According to the
Daily Progress and Bob Gibson, around 300 people showed up last night for a debate between Al Weed and Virgil
"I didn't know they were illegal" Goode at the Senior Center in Charlottesville.

A largely partisan and divided crowd of about 300 people at the Senior Center of Charlottesville heard Weed attack Goode as a career politician who takes questionable contributions and supports Bush more than 80 percent of the time, including on the war in Iraq.
Weed, who has a son about to serve a second tour as a surgeon in Iraq, said Goode "follows the Republican lead at every turn" and has never questioned Bush on his war policy in "the failed occupation of Iraq."
VA-05: Virgil Goode Flip-Flops; Now Refusing to Debate

In a statement from the Al Weed Communications Director Curt Gleeson, Al lets loose on Virgil Goode for last week agreeing to debate and this week announcing he would not debate.

Remembrance of a Friend, Too Soon Gone
Tue Apr 25, 2006 at 11:26:52 AM PDT
In a post last week on my blog, I mentioned that a long-time friend was sick and in the hospital, not expected to make it. At the time I was writing that post, my friend lay dying in a North Denver hospital.
This has been incredibly difficult for me to write, partly due to my grief, and partly due to rolling words around in my head for the past week, not really knowing what to choose to say.
Got a Happy Story? Colorado Mountains Edition
Fri Mar 03, 2006 at 05:06:32 PM PDT
With everything that's going on today, don't you need a happy story?
I love camping. I was taken camping by my parents when I was literally weeks old. Growing up in Colorado, I got used to being in the outdoors, going hiking, camping and sometimes just daytrips to the mountains to escape the oppressive heat of Denver in the summertime.
One of the types of camping or daytrips I remember well is when we would go to one of our favorite campgrounds, Cold Creek, a National Forest Campground, and eat breakfast. Cold Creek is outside Denver in the mountains, about 8,000 feet above sea level. All of us would get up really early and get in the car or truck, depending on which we had. We used to have a 1959 Ford station wagon that we would take everywhere. If it wasn't for the fact that transmissions kept being eaten up by that car, it might still have been around today. When running, that car could go places no ordinary car could go. We also had a 1965 Chevy Suburban (in the days of 39-cent gas) that I wish I had to this day. I did end up with a later model of a Suburban, but that's another story.
VA-05: Bern Ewert (D): Is He Hiding Something?
Fri Feb 24, 2006 at 05:07:50 PM PDT
There is a well-worn adage that we as Democrats should tell the whole story before the Republicans get hold of it, so we can define the debate and blunt the effect of it. In other words, better that we should discuss our own warts rather than have them pointed out by our adversaries.
In this diary, I will be discussing Virginia's 5th Congressional District race. There are two Democratic candidates running, Al Weed and Bern Ewert. Al, a pioneering wine grape grower, ran two years ago and was trounced by Virgil Goode. (Goode was implicated today again in MZM dealings with Mitchell Wade.) Bern has been a City Manager among other things.
Today I am focusing on Bern Ewert, because certain facts have come to light in my research on this contest. I want to make sure that we have the best chance at beating Virgil in the fall. Unfortunately, Bern does not look like the person to do that.
Recount Finished in Virginia - UPDATED
Wed Dec 21, 2005 at 05:08:10 PM PDT
The recount is over, and
the Circuit Court of Richmond has announced that Bob McDonnell has retained the certification by the State Board of Elections. Creigh Deeds has conceded.
This is disappointing, but as I have said many times recently, the fact that a Democrat stood for what he believed in a recount is a very important fact. Other candidates will hopefully feel emboldened to do the same thing if they are in a close race or voter problems surface, or for any reason that is worthwhile.
VA-GOV Commonwealth Sues for Equal Access to Polls
Sun Nov 06, 2005 at 08:00:39 PM PDT
The Commonwealth of Virginia has sued for access to polling places that have not been certified as accessible to all.
Acording to the Richmond Times Dispatch article published Sunday, the City of Richmond has resisted efforts by the State Office for Protection and Advocacy (VOPA) to certify their polling places.
Jerry Kilgore Wants You To Take Your Gun to the Bar
Wed Nov 02, 2005 at 12:15:56 PM PDT
Reported in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, (today's edition) on a radio call-in show yesterday (WRVA 1140AM), Jerry Kilgore offered up an opinion that would not surprise his supporters; but, of course that does not include any sane, reasonable people.
VA GOV: Kilgore's 'Sugar Daddy'
Wed Oct 12, 2005 at 03:09:56 AM PDT
You might think that Tim Kaine responded badly to Jerry Kilgore's attack on him regarding the death penalty.
You would be right.
As Tim Tagaris at SSP (Swing State Project) noted earlier this morning, the response made him want to 'throw up in his mouth.' Strong language, but in this case I think it is completely warranted. If you visit Kaine's website (in my sig line) you will find the response that has worried residents and watchers of this election alike.
What I haven't seen in these diaries and articles is that Kaine has another ad, one in which he talks about Jerry's 'sugar daddy'.
The AOL-Style Ad Campaign We'd Like To See
Sat Jan 01, 2005 at 01:40:51 PM PDT
In a recent Virginia/The South diary, someone mentioned that we should be doing ads like AOL, when theirs say "I'd love to lose all my photographs" or "I'd love to get a virus and pass it on to everone".
